Modern Day Beowulf
A modern day Beowulf is the United States. Like Beowulf, our nation likes to boast about its achievements such as being the first to reach the moon. The biggest topic to brag about is our so called "freedom", which we take great pride in. When Beowulf killed Grendel, he kept the monster's arm as a victory trophy. Similarly, the United States holds onto foreign lands as spoils of war.

I agree with your view. The United States is very much like Beowulf. We brag about our achivements and keep quiet about our failures. Who do you think is a modern day Grendel?
ReplyDeleteAfter reading Grendel, I think that the best modern day Grendel is our own American terrorists. Such examples are the Columbine killers and the Oklahoma City bomber. Grendel was born into the same world as the Danes, and his ancestor, Cain, relates him to humans. Yet he feels excluded from the human's celebrations. He is an outcast of society and therefore feels great anger inside. Similarly, the people who commit crimes in their own country are usually on the verge of society. They are misfits, like Grendel.
